Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) is a holistic approach that is multi-disciplinary, flexible, attachment-centered, and challenging. Founded by Dr. Karen Purvis and Dr. David Cross, founders of the Institute of Child Development, TBRI® is an evidence-based, trauma-informed intervention that is specifically designed for children who come from hard places. Children within these hard places can be experiencing anything from maltreatment, abuse, and neglect to multiple home placements, and violence. Although these principles have mainly been applied to dealing with trauma in children, you'll see that they can be applied to all children from any background. Strong attachment relationships between a child and caregiver are an essential part of any child's development, but they can also greatly impact a child's healing process. TBRI® consists of three sets of harmonious principles: Connecting, Empowering, and Correcting Principles, which will be learned about in this and other training modules. TBRI® principles have been used in homes, schools, residential facilities, orphanages, and several other settings. They are designed for use with children and youth of all ages and all risk levels. TBRI® is effective because it is founded in research and theory and is based upon how optimal development should have occurred. By helping caregivers understand what should have happened in early development, TBRI® principles guide children and youth back to their natural development trajectory.
