You wouldn't necessarily think of biofeedback for use in treatment of acne, but it can be investigated. Normally stress is a leading cause of breakouts which can be reduced by using relaxation which is where biofeedback comes in. It guides you into a state of relaxation, something you can do yourself any time it's convenient for you. It may take some time to see actual results so try and stick with it for a few weeks. It is something good to try before using topical or internal solutions.

Self-Management?

Self-management is at the heart of biofeedback. In fact, the electronic instruments normally associated with biofeedback is really a tool to enhance our awareness so we can learn to manage ourselves in ways that we might not otherwise be able. But no matter how good the instruments are that increase our awareness we still need to do something, on a minute by minute and day to day basis. The core issue is that biofeedback increases our self-management skills but we never retain skills without practice.

Biofeedback is Mind-Body Therapy

Since Biofeedback's goal is to bring awareness normally subtle and difficult to detect internal signals to consciousness it has been termed a mind-body therapy.  This is an apt description because instead of teaching a person how to ignore their body or to ignore their mind biofeedback seeks to bring the two together to increase the mind's awareness of the body's function. With this increased awareness comes increased control and often improvement in symptoms.

As has been noted elsewhere, Biofeedback can help make unconscious physical responses conscious. It does this through the use of electronic instruments that measure a variety of physiological responses. Biofeedback is particularly useful for chronic headaches, either Tension Headaches or Migraine Headaches. Relaxation in the case of headaches can be confusing since many people report sudden migraines upon  relaxing. It is not uncommon for a person who is prone to headaches to experience a sever headache when they finally get a weekend off or suddenly relax with a session in a hot tub. While this may be confusing to headache sufferers and may lead them to think that relaxation should be avoided, this is not confusing to those who treat headaches ...

Uses of EMG Biofeedback

EMG is a well researched and effective biofeedback method often used in treatment of chronic pain. It is useful in improving neck pain, back pain, jaw pain, headache and whiplash. It's use is effective in pain reduction because it measures muscle activity accurately and sensitively. When a muscle is tense it both causes pain and aggravates underlying nerve and muscle damage. By reducing muscle tension not only does the pain become reduced but healing of underlying damage is improved.

There has been technology breakthroughs that is allowing biofeedback equipment to be manufactured for home use. These powerful, portable and affordable biofeedback devices are perfect for problems like high blood pressure, stress related problems like insomnia and chronic headaches.

Until recently, you would have to go to a biofeedback therapist and spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars to learn how to reduce your stress, eliminate your headaches or lower your blood pressure. That is because the equipment was costly and not portable. Now you can use portable biofeedback devices in the comfort of your home and get expert help for a fraction of the cost of office visits.

Biofeedback is Painless

We are used to a certain amount of pain when being treated by doctors, so it is not surprising that people hearing about how biofeedback can monitor various internal physiological states immediately think that biofeedback must be painful. The truth is that biofeedback is not painful because nothing actually penetrates the skin. The electronics behind biofeedback have been developed to measure different physiological responses by measuring the electrical activity of those responses from outside the body. When testing to see how strongly the nerve is firing in a particular muscle, the electrodes stick to the skin over the muscle. When measuring the heart rate a finger tip sensor is used. The fact that biofeedback is painless should be reassuring to anyone ...

Biofeedback is Non-Invasive

By using sensitive electronic equipment, biofeedback is capable of 'seeing' inside the body and giving us a view of what our body is doing. All this without needles or surgery. While the CT scan and the MRI scan is capable of mapping out the physical structures of our body non-invasively, biofeedback can give us a clear picture of how our body is functioning depending upon which sensors are used. To name a few; EMG (electromyograph) sensors measure muscle activity, GSR sensors measure the galvanic skin response, temperature sensors measure temperature and respiration sensors measure the movement of our chest or abdomen during respiration.

Biofeedback has No Side Effects

You constantly hear about drug recalls after thousands of people have been using them. Medications that were deemed safe, are now suspect and are to be avoided. Biofeedback is not only effective for chronic problems like stress, headaches and anxiety but it has none of the side effects associated with medications
