This is a rare disease that affects the blood vessels. Blood flow to the toes and fingers can be interrupted or constricted. Doctors don't really know the cause of the attacks, but seem to get worse with stress or cold temperatures. By adjusting your lifestyle in simple ways, like keeping warm and covering your hands in cold weather can help with attacks. Biofeedback is also a good way to help with the attacks by practicing relaxation. Biofeedback can help gain control over involuntary body functions like temperature, heart rate or blood pressure.

Self-Management?

Self-management is at the heart of biofeedback. In fact, the electronic instruments normally associated with biofeedback is really a tool to enhance our awareness so we can learn to manage ourselves in ways that we might not otherwise be able. But no matter how good the instruments are that increase our awareness we still need to do something, on a minute by minute and day to day basis. The core issue is that biofeedback increases our self-management skills but we never retain skills without practice.

Biofeedback is Mind-Body Therapy

Since Biofeedback's goal is to bring awareness normally subtle and difficult to detect internal signals to consciousness it has been termed a mind-body therapy.  This is an apt description because instead of teaching a person how to ignore their body or to ignore their mind biofeedback seeks to bring the two together to increase the mind's awareness of the body's function. With this increased awareness comes increased control and often improvement in symptoms.

It is not uncommon for a person who is prone to headaches to experience a sever headache when they finally get a weekend off or suddenly relax with a session in a hot tub. While this may be confusing to headache sufferers and may lead them to think that relaxation should be avoided, this is not confusing to those who treat headaches ...

Uses of EMG Biofeedback

EMG is a well researched and effective biofeedback method often used in treatment of chronic pain. It is useful in improving neck pain, back pain, jaw pain, headache and whiplash. It's use is effective in pain reduction because it measures muscle activity accurately and sensitively. When a muscle is tense it both causes pain and aggravates underlying nerve and muscle damage. By reducing muscle tension not only does the pain become reduced but healing of underlying damage is improved.
