I read an article in the
Boston Globe that people who have migraines at at a higher risk for stroke and heart attack. Apparently doctors don't know what the link is, but have noticed a significant risk to those who have migraines four to six attacks a month. Many patients don't take their headaches seriously and don't want to take medication because of the side effects that can occur. There are several alternatives to medications that I have read about, one being biofeedback.

A lot of women experience incontinence, mostly due to childbirth. Some women have it so bad that jogging or even just squatting down can create leakage of urine. Instead of surgery, biofeedback is another option. With the use of electrodes, muscle strength can be measured and you can train the vaginal muscles with repetitive exercises to strengthen those muscles. Along with this is doing Kegel exercises regularly can help beat incontinence.

Doctors are finding temperature biofeedback to be very helpful in treating patients with insomnia. They have found that body temperature has a lot to do with how well people are sleeping and how fast they can fall asleep. Using this biofeedback technique patients can learn how warm themselves up and get to sleep. This is great for those who do not want to use medications and who need the rest!

You probably don't even realize it, but using your reflection in a mirror is a form of biofeedback. If you didn't have that mirror things like shaving or putting on makeup would be hard to learn. Any system like your heart rate or perspiration that can be monitored can also be controlled. This is the great benefit of biofeedback use. You can train your body and become conscious. It's a great tool in managing stress, pain and headaches without the use of medications.

Many dentists can't seem to help with this issue, only able to repair a broken tooth or offer mouth guards for when you sleep to help with bruxing. The problem is there is no prevention or actual treatment of the problem, but a "quick fix" that doesn't really eliminate the problem. Biofeedback is a great solution to bruxing and can actually train you to relax the jaw muscles and the more and more you do it, the more you will be able to catch yourself doing it and stop. Imagine getting a good nights sleep and having no pain the next day.

Check with your doctor if you have a child or teen that has been diagnosed with this disorder. It would be great to try alternatives to medication and give control to the child in being able to handle their disorder.

This is a rare disease that affects the blood vessels. Blood flow to the toes and fingers can be interrupted or constricted. Doctors don't really know the cause of the attacks, but seem to get worse with stress or cold temperatures. By adjusting your lifestyle in simple ways, like keeping warm and covering your hands in cold weather can help with attacks. Biofeedback is also a good way to help with the attacks by practicing relaxation. Biofeedback can help gain control over involuntary body functions like temperature, heart rate or blood pressure.
