Biofeedback is Painless

We are used to a certain amount of pain when being treated by doctors, so it is not surprising that people hearing about how biofeedback can monitor various internal physiological states immediately think that biofeedback must be painful. The truth is that biofeedback is not painful because nothing actually penetrates the skin. The electronics behind biofeedback have been developed to measure different physiological responses by measuring the electrical activity of those responses from outside the body. When testing to see how strongly the nerve is firing in a particular muscle, the electrodes stick to the skin over the muscle. When measuring the heart rate a finger tip sensor is used.
The fact that biofeedback is painless should be reassuring to anyone thinking of learning how to help themselves by using biofeedback.
