Being Overweight is Bad for Your Brain

From the conclusion of recent studies, it has been found that the brains of obese people have shown some signs of damage. The brain normally atrophies with age but being obese can accelerate the process. Atrophy of the brain contributes to issues with dementia. Those who are obese had a significant lower density of gray-matter in several brain regions that involve the regulation of eating behavior and the perception of taste. Researchers do not have a definitive answer as to why fat contributes to these issues. Being obese can also increase health issues like sleep apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease which are all bad for the brain. In the US about a third of adults are obese and dementia is one of the most devastating and costly health issues of old age. No matter if you’re fat, thin, young or old, taking care of your brain by eating well and exercising is key.
